Far Rockaway, N.Y. – In 2015, Council Member Donovan Richards’ office entered its third year organizing Participatory Budgeting (PB), which empowers residents to allocate part of his office’s capital discretionary funds, in District 31.
After months of community and delegate meetings, more than 3,300 voters selected the top 3 winning projects, with the fourth being partially funded.
The winning projects selected by the Far Rockaway community:
- Far Rockaway HS – Library Upgrade: $250,000; 1,300 votes
- Far Rockaway HS – New Weight Room: $200,000; 1,172 votes
- Far Rockaway HS – Locker Room Renovations: $500,000; 1,151 votes
- PS 183 – Classroom Upgrades: $50,000; 1,145 votes
In last year’s budget, Richards gave $1 million to schools and parks in Laurelton, Rosedale and Springfield Gardens and $1.4 million to schools and parks in Far Rockaway during PB in his first year as Council Member.
“I’d like to thank everyone who got involved to ensure that PB succeeded once again, especially the students and faculty of our local schools. It is crucial that we engage our youth in the political process and prepare them to be the future leaders our city needs and deserves,” said Council Member Donovan Richards. “This year’s process was a huge success as we brought in more than 3,000 votes resulting in some big improvements for Far Rockaway High School. I look forward to bringing PB back to District 31 next year and I’d like to thank Speaker Mark-Viverito for her leadership in making this program thrive across the city.”
