1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East, largest labor union in New York State, and New York State Nurses Association, the state’s largest nurses union, announce endorsement of 23rd Assembly District candidate Stacey Pheffer Amato, citing dedication to ensuring quality healthcare and access to jobs for every family

Pheffer Amato: Quality healthcare is the right of every Queens family

Rockaway Beach, Queens – Stacey Pheffer Amato, candidate for State Assembly District 23, continues to build on her strong credentials as the champion of working families with her endorsement this week by both 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East and the New York State Nurses Association. In announcing their endorsements, both unions praised Pheffer Amato’s dedication to fighting for quality healthcare and employment opportunities in communities that have in recent years seen the devastating closure of a local hospital.

“We are proud to endorse Stacey Pheffer Amato for New York State Assembly,” said Helen Schaub, 1199SEIU Vice President for Policy and Legislation. “Stacey’s commitment to ensuring every family receives the best possible healthcare makes her the clear champion of working New Yorkers and the values we hold dear. At a time when healthcare is transforming, she will ‎fight for access to needed services and high quality jobs. Stacey will be a powerful voice in Albany for the working people of Queens.”

“Stacey Pheffer Amato is the clear choice to represent southern Queens and Rockaway in the New York State Assembly,” said Marva Wade RN, NYSNA 1st Vice-President and Chairperson of the NYSNA-PAC. “Stacey understands that providing our registered nurses with the tools they need is essential to ensuring quality healthcare for New York families, and we know that she will stand with us in Albany to fight for quality healthcare for all.”

“I am honored to have the endorsement of the men and women of 1199SEIU and the New York State Nurses Association,” said Stacey Pheffer Amato, candidate for New York State Assembly. “Quality healthcare is the right of every Queens family and our nurses and healthcare workers truly are the frontline in this fight. I am proud to stand with them as we ensure our communities remain strong and healthy now and in the future.”

1199SEIU is the largest union in New York and the largest healthcare worker union in the nation. It’s 220,000 New York City nurses and healthcare workers include staff at the many hospitals, nursing homes, homecare programs, pharmacies, urgent care facilities and clinics that dot neighborhoods across southern Queens and Rockaway. The union has also been a leading advocate in the long-planned upgrades to emergency room facilities at St. John’s Episcopal Hospital in Far Rockaway, the area’s only hospital following the closure of Peninsula Hospital in 2012.

The New York State Nurses Association represents 40,000 frontline nurses dedicated to providing healthcare for all. The Association is New York’s largest union and professional association for registered nurses, and has been a vocal advocate for ensuring adequate staffing at hospitals as a key to improving healthcare across the state.

Given the lingering specter of Peninsula’s closure and a growing senior population across southern Queens and Rockaway, healthcare is a primary concern to voters in the 23rd Assembly District. The community is home to one of the city’s largest senior populations, making access to quality healthcare a necessity for thousands of families. As the candidate of the community’s healthcare workers and nurses, Pheffer Amato stands to be a strong advocate for communities in southern Queens and Rockaway, which continue to rebuild vital resources following the devastation of Superstorm Sandy.

With the endorsements of 1199SEIU and the New York State Nurses Association, Pheffer Amato continues to build support among the state’s largest labor unions. The news comes on the heel of a recent high-profile endorsement by the Transport Workers Union Local 100, which has been a driving force in the effort to reactivate the Rockaway Beach Rail Line and improve transportation in communities long suffering from limited transit resources.
