Potential Republican mayoral contender Eric Ulrich said it’s “ridiculous” for President Trump to punish sanctuary cities like New York — but said he would let Immigrations and Customs Enforcement back onto Rikers Island.
The Queens City Councilman, who has positioned himself as an anti-Trump Republican, said in an appearance on the Brian Lehrer show he would expand the crimes that trigger city cooperation with deportation, but otherwise maintain policies to shield the undocumented.
“I think that’s ridiculous,” he said of Trump signing an executive order to withdraw federal funding from cities that don’t fully cooperate with federal immigration enforcement.
The city booted ICE from Rikers two years ago, with legislation that also dramatically narrowed which detainer requests from the agency it would honor.
